Abbott Duphalac Lactulose Oral Solution 200ml

Description

Duphalac oral solution contains a laxative called lactulose.  Duphalac may contain small amounts of milk, sugars (e.g. lactose), galactose, epilactose or fructose.

As a prebiotic substance, lactulose intensifies the growth of Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus, while Clostridium and Escherichia coli may be suppressed, leading to alleviation of constipation.

Duphalac is used for : Constipation (infrequent bowel movements, hard and dry stools).  To produce soft stools.  For example, if you have haemorrhoids (piles) or after colon/anal surgery.  Portal systemic encephalopathy (PSE), a liver disease causing confusion, tremor, decreased level of consciousness.

Dosage and Administration : Take Duphalac diluted or undiluted.  Swallow the medicine quickly.  Do not keep it in your mouth.  Take the dosage preferably once a day at the same time.  During treatment with laxatives, drink sufficient amounts of fluids (6-8 glasses).

Dosing in constipation or for stool softening :

Dosing in Portal Systemic encephalopathy (PSE) (for adults only) : 

Starting dose : 30 – 50 ml Three times daily.

This dose may be adjusted by your doctor to the maintenance dose to achieve 2 to 3 soft stools per day.

Do not take Duphalac : If you are allergic to lactulose or any of the ingredients of Duphalac, suffer from galactosaemia, gastrointestinal obstruction, digestive perforation, or risk of digestive perforation.

Side Effect : You may experience diarrhoea, flatulence, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and electrolyte imbalance due to diarrhoea.

Hypersensitivity, rash, pruritus, urticaria and erythema may occur.

Care when taking Duphalac

Consult your doctor, if : the desired results are not observed after several days of treatment, you experience painful abdominal symptoms of unknown cause, or the side effects get serious.

Talk to your doctor/pharmacist before starting Duphalac if you suffer from any medical conditions, in particular, hereditary problems of galactose or fructose intolerance, Lapp lactase deficiency, glucose-galactose malabsorption.   Dose may be taken into consideration in diabetics when using high doses for PSE.  Long-term use of unadjusted doses/misuse can lead to diarrhoea and disturbance of electrolyte balance.  If you have taken too high a dose, you may experience diarrhoea and/or abdominal pain.  Stop treatment until symptoms have subsided.
